Halong Bay Weather and the Best Time to Visit

The short answer: November is the best all-round month for Halong Bay weather. Its average high is 25.5°C, with 38.9 mm of rain over 5.8 days and a 24.9°C sea (checked July 2026). Pick December for the lowest rainfall, May to September for warmer water, and avoid February and March if fog would ruin the view.

There is no closed season, but no month guarantees the conditions you want. Climate normals help you choose a season; the official marine forecast shows current conditions, while local sailing decisions still govern departures.

Halong Bay weather by season

The bay has a humid subtropical climate with four real seasons. All figures are climate normals for the Bai Chay station on the bay (IBST, checked July 2026).

Spring (March–April). Choose it for mild air, not reliable visibility. March still sits inside the fog-and-drizzle pattern; April reaches a 26.1°C high, but rainfall rises to 86.3 mm.

Summer (May–September). This is the warm-water choice, with sea averages from 27.3 to 30.5°C. It is also the wet choice: rainfall peaks in August at 430.5 mm over 18.7 days, and tropical weather can disrupt sailings from late May into autumn.

Autumn (October–November). October remains warm and wet. November is the cleaner compromise: a 25.5°C high, 38.9 mm of rain and a 24.9°C sea.

Winter (December–February). Choose it for cool deck weather and possible mist. December is the driest month at 18.1 mm, while February and March carry the greater fog risk. The sea averages 19.6 to 21.7°C.

The best time to visit, honestly

Choose November for the balance. Choose December for the lowest rainfall. Choose May to September for warmer water and accept the wetter, less predictable window. If visibility is non-negotiable, avoid February and March. No month guarantees a clear sky.

Fog, typhoons and cancellations

TripAdvisor winter reviews split over the same condition: "beautifully eerie" for one traveler, "we couldn't see the karsts" for another. Winter fog is a feature or a bug depending on what you came for. If you want atmosphere, the mist can add it. If you want the postcard, it can erase the reason you came.

The winter fog-and-drizzle pattern often called crachin runs from late November into March and can linger into early April. Humidity averages 84.0% in February and 87.1% in March, against 76.3% in December. That supports a greater late-winter fog risk; it does not guarantee that every December morning is clear. Tropical-cyclone risk is seasonal, but it does not obey a four-month boundary. An official NCHMF annual outlook said activity could return from the second half of May (checked July 2026), and seasonal advisories can extend into autumn. Official safety decisions can suspend sailings when conditions require it. Keep dates flexible and don't schedule the bay as the last thing before a flight.

One thing not to bother with: the live 14-day forecast widgets the booking blogs love. If you're planning months out, a two-week forecast tells you nothing useful; plan against the seasonal normals above, and check Vietnam's official forecaster, the NCHMF, only in the few days before you sail.

What each season is for, and when to skip it

Come for the best all-round climate numbers: November. Come for the lowest rainfall: December. Come for warm water: May to September, with the wet-season trade-off included. Come for mist and cooler deck weather: winter.

Skip a season if it fights your priorities. Skip February and March if fog would ruin the trip. Avoid building a tight, flight-dependent itinerary around the late-May-to-autumn tropical-weather window.
